Highly detailed 1/72 scale assembly model kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerst?rer ("Destroyer"), a twin-engine, single-seat, heavy-fighter operated by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. The Messerschmitt 110 was developed in the 1930's in an attempt by Luftwaffe planners to develop a multi-purpose fighter/ground-attack aircraft called the Zerst?rer or "Destroyer". The "Destroyer" concept was championed by the commander of the Luftwaffe Hermann G?ring, and the Bf 110 was the first of three "Destroyer" types produced by Messerschmitt. Bf 110s performed well during early German campaigns against outdated aircrafts, but when it was sent to protect Luftwaffe bombers across the English Channel during the epic Battle of Britain, the 110's flaw as a fighter was bitterly exposed. Against dedicated fighter aircrafts such as the Supermarine Spitfire, the Bf 110 was completely outclassed, and soon more Bf 110s were being shot down than the bombers that they were sent to protect. Several attempts were made by Messerschmitt to upgrade the 110, including the Bf 210, an aircraft with serious aerodynamic flaws and a disaster for the Luftwaffe. In the end, the novel attempt to develop a multi-purpose fighter by the Luftwaffe failed, largely because technologies of the era simply have not caught-up to the revolutionary idea. The "Destroyer" concept, however, has been vindicated with modern multi-role aircrafts in the likes of the American F/A-18 Hornet and the British Tornado, two of the truly great multi-role fighters ever to go to war. This 1/48 scale assembly kit by Fujimi features the Messerschmitt Bf110 C/D Long-range Zerst?rer variant fitted with a 1,200 Liter (320 US gallon) belly-mounted fuel tank called "Dackelbauch". This kit features nice exterior and interior details with illustrated assembly guide (mostly Japanese with some English instructions) included.
